Movie Review: Morbius

Sony Pictures

After multiple delays, Morbius is here. Is Marvel’s new legend worth a watch?

Morbius tells the story of Micheal (Jared Leto) who has a rare blood disease. In an attempt to cure it, Micheal undergoes an experiment that ends up making him into an unexpected form of vampirism. The results of the experiment give him speed and strength and a desire for fresh blood. Along the way, we meet Milo and Mobius’s coworker and love interest Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona)

Sony Pictures

With a 17% score on rotten tomatoes, Morbius has been smashed by critics. Morbius is not Marvel’s best, but it is a fun time. I went in with below expectations due to its numerous delays and trailers. The film lacks a good story for Morbius. Who is Morbius? Why should we care about him as a human? Not only were none of these questions answered, but the film felt like there were missing scenes that could have made Morbius a more edgy and humane character. The special effects are cringy, making it hard to take seriously as a whole.

Good news though. What fans are not realizing with Morbius is the fact that it’s brings something new and exciting to the Marvel universe. It wasn’t done right, but it opens a new path for unique storytelling. Morbius is a horror movie with frightful vampires that feel like they jumped out of the iconic Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Although the story lacks some in-depth meaning, it introduces a new world, horror.

Who truly stands out in the film is Jared Leto. He creates a character that’s convincing and enjoys life as a vampire. Due to the poor script, Leto does what he can with Morbius. The script offers nothing that makes you feel empathy for the character, not even when he is battling himself on what is good or bad for his surroundings/himself. Director Daniel Espinosa offers two post-credit scenes that feel forced and bring nothing new to the table. It also doesn’t create anything special for the future of Morbius.

Morbius is a film that has nothing special to offer as it feels more of a filler movie. The film is easy to follow and at least introduces a new marvel comic book character to the mainstream. I highly recommend for comic books fans to check this one out to have their own opinion. Morbius is forgettable and offers no real explanation or intentions of how it connects to other Marvel films. Sony, you get a free pass, but please get it together.

Morbius is now playing exclusively in movie theaters.
