A film adaptation of Deep Water based on the 1957 novel directed by Adrian Lyne is streaming on Hulu now. Is it worth a watch?
Vic (Ben Affleck) and Melinda (Ana de Armas) live in what others believe to be a picture-perfect marriage. Behind closed doors, Vic and Melinda live in an open marriage. Vic in love with Melinda accepts the conditions to avoid conflict and divorce. Vic’s obsession with what he believes can save his marriage leads to the unexpected for Melinda and their daughter.

Director Adrian Lyne best known for other exotic thrillers like Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, and Unfaithful returns after 20 years with a new film that is very slow-paced and has an unsatisfying ending. You spend about an hour and a half with this unhappy marriage whose story is so dull and honestly very reckless. I say reckless as they have a child who they don’t prioritize . Lyne whose best gift is to bring a different interpretation of sexuality to his films doesn’t fail to direct Exes Affleck and Armas (Affleck and Armas were dating while filming, but no longer together) chemistry that evokes lust throughout the movie. Sadly, he misses an opportunity to create a high intense climax in the third act which ends the film pretty weak. Viewers might have a hard time finishing the film due to many unanswered questions never covered within the first 30 minutes of the film.

Ben Affleck is good with his non-stop questionable reactions to his wife’s bizarre but inviting behavior. Affleck’s range of emotions shows how he has become an actor in Hollywood that showcases dominance. He is continuously rising with every role he is given. Without Affleck, perhaps Deep Water would have been a shipwreck.
Deep Water is what I would save for a “Hulu and Chill” kind of night. The movie is nothing special. It has many moments full of incredulity. Perhaps one or two glasses of wine will make the story a bit more interesting.
Deep Water is now streaming exclusively on Hulu. Be advised that this film is Rated R and not suitable for children.
