McCoy Rigby Entertainment’s regional theater premiere of “Waitress” promises to be a delightful and compelling start to their 2024-2025 season. This heartwarming musical, with a book by Jessie Nelson and music and lyrics by the talented Sara Bareilles, is based on the motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly. The story centers around Jenna, a waitress and pie-making extraordinaire who dreams of escaping her small town and troubled marriage. Not only does Jenna craft delicious pies that echo her tumultuous life, but she also finds hope in a baking contest and a serendipitous new acquaintance. This show offers audiences a taste of change, as Jenna navigates her way to personal happiness.
The music of “Waitress” is sensational and perfectly meshes with the themes of the story. Sara Bareilles’ melodies are both emotive and catchy, bringing Jenna’s dreams and desires to life through every lyric. Desi Oakley’s portrayal of Jenna poignantly captures the character’s relatable struggles, with her powerful vocal performance highlighting the depth of Bareilles’ compositions. The songs resonate well with the audience, portraying authentic human experiences that many can connect with, enriching the storytelling.
Despite its adherence to the original Broadway version, the direction by Abbey O’Brien and choreography by Cost N’ Mayor infuse new elements that enhance the narrative. Their focus on Jenna’s relationship with her mother is particularly notable, providing additional layers to Jenna’s motivations and the urgency of her quest for freedom. This nuanced exploration of Jenna’s background adds depth to her character, making her journey even more compelling for the audience.

The chemistry between Desi Oakley’s Jenna and Ben Jacoby’s Dr. James Pomatter is electric and genuine. Their performances are filled with flirtatious energy, making their interactions feel natural and entertaining. Their ability to listen and respond to one another on stage brings their characters to life, adding to the overall richness of the production. The ensemble cast is equally delightful, with standout performances by Jared Gertner as Ogie. Gertner’s comedic timing and eccentric choices provide much-needed levity, balancing the heavier moments of the story. Desi Oakley’s heartfelt rendition of Bareilles’ songs, combined with Gertner’s comedic flair, ensures that “Waitress” is a standout production that will leave audiences eager for more.

“Waitress” will be playing performances until October 13th at La Mirada Theatre. Get your tickets!
