Ti West is breaking all the norms in the horror genre with the last installment of his first trilogy. In MaXXXine, It’s the 1980s in Hollywood and Adult Film Star Maxine is finally getting her big break. Maxine faces vengeance when a mysterious killer wants to get even due to her sinister past. She must choose between fame or coming to terms with her past to survive. Ti West delivers a haunting conclusion to horror fans’ new favorite icon, Pearl, or now Maxine.
Ti West’s storytelling in MaXXXine has evolved and is superior to his previous two films. West focuses on what fans want back, the slasher genre, which was in high demand in the 80s. In the last chapter of the popular trilogy, West achieves to take viewers on an immersive journey of 80s Hollywood true crime, nostalgia, and sexology. At moments, the film can feel like a slow burn, desiring more actions versus dialogue. Towards the third act, the film ends happily ever after for its main lead, but also conveys a bittersweet message that feels correct for her journey. West delivers messages of desire, neglect, rejection, and self-reflection that are easily noticeable and add more depth to all characters, mostly Maxine. West showcases LA’s most popular sites such as familiar Studios and known streets, which honors the heart of Hollywood and its influence on society.

Mia Goth, who has worked with West since 2022 shines even more than in the first two films delivering strong mannerisms and quality characteristics that help Maxine’s journey in this particular moment of her life. Goth’s vision to tell Maxine’s story is clearly understood when it is only Goth in solo shots, as her impressive impressions add more to West’s vision to tell a well-written narrative of a female rising in Hollywood. Goth’s involvement with West and her extraordinary performance will help her get access to mainstream Hollywood. She is on a journey to establish herself as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
West delivers a story with powerful messages, unique bloody deaths, and well-developed characters. The complete trilogy is set to become a classic and a favorite in the horror space. “MaXXXine” hits theaters on July 5th.
