A charming production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, with a book by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman, and Glenn Slater by McCoy Rigby Entertainment is back by popular demand at La Mirada Theatre, and its spellbinding beginning to end.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale and the successful classic animated film, the story follows a young mermaid named Ariel who wants to go beyond the sea when she encounters a young sailor named Eric. Ariel falls in love with Eric and makes a deal with a sea witch to be human and be part of his world. Things don’t go as planned for Ariel as she must face the challenges of the human world and find her own voice so that Eric can notice her true self.
From the moment, the stunning orchestra begins the familiar overture from the film, you are immersed into a beautiful world created by the McCoy Rigby Entertainment that is fascinating. With vivid lighting, quick transitions, and flying sequences, the illusion of being under the sea is sustainable. The production also provides a range of artistry that works perfectly with the source material. For example, The mermaids moved in a particular way to portray an underwear sensation that works flawlessly in big musical numbers and does not bother from important plot moments.
We have had over a decade of interpretations of Ariel and Leianna Weaver, who plays the principal role, delivers a refreshingly timeless performance. Weaver’s divine voice soars high at La Mirada Theatre, showing a strong stage presence, and making Ariel so emotive and powerful. She is truly a Disney Princess.

The whole cast makes a noticeable effort to create magic on stage. Still, Dana Orange deserves to be praised as Sebastian for his brash, gleeful, and contagious daffy interpretation of the crab. The production also includes a range of new musical numbers that help us understand these beloved characters from a more in-depth look, providing lyrics that make them more reliable and connected.
If any production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid deserves a return to Broadway, it would be this one as McCoy Rigby Entertainment focuses on delivering a mythical, engaging, fascinating production of the beloved animated film. TRUE DISNEY MAGIC AT EVERY CORNER!
