After a successful Broadway run, ‘Funny Girl’ is touring across America, featuring the iconic score by Broadway legends Jule Styne and Bob Merrill and an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart. ”Funny Girl’ is best known for its popular songs such “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” The 1968 film with Barbra Streisand is beloved by many, and now a new revamp production is making waves at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Cosa Mesa.
The poor to richness bittersweet story follows the showstopper Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreams of becoming a Broadway star. Brice faces the challenges of dreaming bigger when she meets Nick Arnstein, a man she madly falls in love with. Brice must choose between the bright lights of Broadway or the man she loves.
Many can say that ‘Funny Girl’ is problematic due to its outdated source material and themes. Still, director Michael Mayer and writer Harvey Fierstein deliver a production that should be seen for what it is, rather than focusing on what could be adapted differently and interpreted. The charming production, which does not use attractive uses sets, focuses on great lighting design to grab the viewer’s attention and showcase the talented performers who are pouring their hearts and souls to bring the beloved story onto the stage. The show’s beginning to end combines traditional and contemporary elements that are distinguished from what we see today in modern theater. The second act feels lengthy due to its unnecessary songs that feel repetitive with the same message. Perhaps cutting one or two songs could have made the second act feel a bit more cohesive.

The role of Fanny Brice is challenging and demanding but rising star Katerina McCrimmon knocks the role out of the water with unforgettable notes, great comedic timing, incredible improvisation, and jocose moments. It will be hard to forget McCrimmon as Fanny as she makes the role her own and gives a modern take to Fanny that is sure to inspire anyone who is dreaming big.
“Funny Girl” is a delightful time at the theater for its timeless and charming songs, the message of moving forward, and authenticity. “Funny Girl” plays at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Cosa Mesa until the June 9th. Don’t let anyone rain on your parade to get tickets!
