Theatre Review: Director and Artistic Tim Robbins brings a raw interpretation of Topsy Turvy (A Musical Greek Vaudeville) and showcases the sorrow of the last four years with an inspiring message of self-reflection

The Cast of Topsy Turvy at the The Actor’s Gang in Culver City

What is set in the intimate space of The Actor’s Gang in Culver City and in the world of classic Greek theatre, Topsy Turvy follows the unity of a Greek Chorus of mortals who are exposed to a mysterious illness. The Chorus must make difficult decisions together, learn to isolate and take risks to survive. In search of ease, the chorus prays to the Gods, seeking divine intervention to help mend their divisiveness and restore their ability to sing together. The chorus is also threatened by visits of unique personas that challenge their logic and reasoning.

Director and artist Tim Robbins brings together a special, stellar performance that provides unity through its unique storytelling. The play also showcases actors from all areas of life who give strong performances to deliver the important vision of Tim Robbins. Although some monologues feel full and lengthy in time and in wording can be difficult to understand, Robbin takes risks by involving musical numbers to bring something new to the original material, which works perfectly. Brought to life by a small orchestra, six original songs written by Robbins help understand the desires and struggles of the chorus. The play also includes a set of unique known personas such as the Cupid, the Aztec goddess Coatlique, the biblical character Onan, and Aphrodite to name a few that move the story forward and make you think out of the box of common situations and norms.

It’s hard to say who is a stand-out, as the cast literally works together as a chorus to bring this Greek play alive. No one is better than anyone else. Everyone’s talents make the message of this remarkable Greek play stronger and easily memorable.
