The tour production of the Broadway musical, Disney’s “Aladdin” based on the beloved animated film is no different from any of the magical musicals Disney on Broadway has produced. From the moment, the first musical note is played, a whole new world is introduced with new characters, songs, and also a story that fans will be fond of. The stand-alone story is a pleasant surprise, as the characters we have known for decades, showcase more desires and needs through innovative musical numbers and new supportive characters that make them have more dept and connection. Viewers might be shocked by some of the alterations made, perhaps not seeing beloved animated animals they know. Thankfully, their replacements help the story be more accurate and culturally correct.
Tony Award and eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act)is responsible for originating new songs and give a refresher to known tunes from the animated film are superb. A few memorable songs include “This Palace Wall” “A Million Miles Away”, A Whole New World,”, and “A Friend like Me”. The songs mentioned lets the centuries-old folktale have its own wings and narrative.

Director and choreographer, two time Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon) studied the magic and gives an extremely well thought production which feels like a whole new world that’s dazzling, delight, and is a wonder after wonder.
Overall, The whole cast delivers a first-class and enthusiastic performance that involves dedication and showcases originality. All four leads Adi Roy (Aladdin), Marcus M. Martin (Genie), Senzel Ahmady (Jasmine), Anand Nagraj (Jafar) are enchanted and grand. Roy as Aladdin is charming and will appeal to young boys to show truth. Ahmady as Jasmine is angelic when she sings, as her voice travels and feels like great storytelling. Nagraj makes Jafar more wickedly devilish. Lastly, Martin as the Genie is a showstopper and just feels right for today’s generation.
“Aladdin” soars high on its own unique magical carpet, which explains why the musical has lasted 10 years on Broadway. It’s a dazzling new place you never knew and will wanted to revisit again.
Disney’s Aladdin will play at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County for a limited engagement of one week, through May 12! Do not miss it!
