Movie Review: ‘Late Night with the Devil’ An Instant Horror Classic

Horror has never been as innovative and inventive as Colin Cairnes & Cameron Cairnes new film. The film takes place on October 31, 1977, where we meet late-night talk show ‘Night Owls’ Late Jack Delroy. As his career and show ratings have fallen apart, Delrou decides to host a Halloween special like no other, unaware that he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America. Delroy to his surprise comes face to face with his past, present, and future in a way he never imagined.

The Carines Brothers who are the directors and writers for the film showcase their originality from beginning to end, delivering a story that becomes alarming due to the topics delivered. The film contains elements that spark conversation due to the common territory the film takes place in. Anyone who has tuned into a late-night talk show episode will be amazed at how the Carines Brothers use traditional media such as commercials, TV static, and sudden camera movement that create uncommon, indelible fear. The Brothers also do well in disguising the foreseen in surprising ways that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. What also works here is how well messages, images, or features are hidden that capture the essentials of beloved iconic horror films. It’s a very well-developed package for horror fans.

Everyone in the film shines, but David Dastmalchian as Jack Delroy deserves his flowers. Not only does he do a sensational job as the protagonist and the antagonist, but he also channels a lost man and showcases those emotions through fascinating expressions that leave the viewer with questions and at moments shocked. Through scenes, Delroy also captures the essentials of a TV host who embodies a natural and welcoming style. Delroy is even more incredible by the end of the third act, as he delivers an impressive performance that is horrifying and pretty eerie. Without a doubt, Dastmalchain’s performance will capture audiences and have a historic significance in the horror space.

‘Late Night with the Devil’ will capture hearts, make you think, and will become an instant classic for its unique storytelling that will dominate the horror fandom for a very long time. A+
