The musical follows the heartening true story of one of the most successful songwriters/artists in music history. The musical includes King’s biggest hits to tell her career story, which began with Gerry Goffin as her songwriter partner. The musical also touches on the subject of infidelity, which led to King’s solo career. The musical uses a concert style approach at some points to engage the audience and create a fun sensation.

Director David Ruttura dazzles in production value as he puts you right in front of the action with memorable scenes that absorb all your energy and make you feel each character’s emotions and desires. Ruttura also delivers instinctive blocking that used throughout the space that showcases every single actor’s talent. Although he does offer the freedom of expression to the ensemble, at moments it can be distracting from the main action that needs the full focus. Sara Sheperd stars as “Carole King” in “BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL,” directed by David Ruttura and now playing at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Sara Sheperd who delivers an extraordinary portrayal as Carole King is very believable when is playing an older Carole King. Sheperd is a powerhouse when she sings, but needs to revise her piano techniques as for almost all her piano performances, you could hear her fingers tapping on the fake piano. Sheperd nails a deep connection with Miles Jacoby who plays her husband and always follows up with emotional musical numbers. Jazz Madison, Fatima El-Bashir, Rosharra Francis and Briana Brooks glow together when performing memorable tunes, and also leave it all on the dance floor when they faced Joyce Chittick impressive choreography. Chittick and Ruttura gives each ensemble member their moment to shine, offering each individual a chance to showcase their talent.
