
Named the World’s Most Popular Musical, Les Misérables!, based on the novel by Victor Hugo and beautifully produced by Cameron Mackintosh arrives in Orange County with a brand-new staging production. The musical tells a fascinating story of forbidden dreams, survival, romance, absolution, and agony which also showcases some of the most popular and known songs in musical theater such as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” “Master of the House” and many others.
At an almost three-hour run, Les Misérables, takes you on a journey revealing immersive sets, a diverse cast that feels more influential than any stage production seen of Les Misérables, and orchestrations that are set to send all types of chills down your spine. Some moments in the new production feel like they were inspired by the 2012 film with the same name, but it all works, as some might feel more familiar with the material with the film’s inspiration.

Another component that makes the production a gem is the costume design by Andreane Neofitou who showcases her ability to revolutionize historically accurate period pieces that evoke a visual narrative that supports the source material rightfully. The diverse cast gives it their all, but Nick Cartell as Jean Valjean is the megastar as he illuminates raw impressions where his unique characterization of the role can be heard within his tone, musical notes, and actions. Christine Heesun Hwang as Eponine is a delight from the moment she first appears on stage, embodying relatable emotions that feel close to the heart, making her interpretation feel fresh and different.
