Movie Review: ‘Transformers Rise of the Beast’ is a wild good ride from beginning to end, with a promising future for the franchise

Paramount Pictures

The Transformers are back, bigger than ever in a new spin-off introducing a new cast and a bunch of new transformers. In this new thrilling story. Unicron, an eating planet transformer, is after a ‘Transwarp Key’ which will give him power over Earth and also end the Human species. Along the way, we meet Noah (Anthony Ramos), a struggling New Yorker who is fighting for his dreams, and an intern, Elena (Dominique Fishback) who is studying artifacts in a New York museum. Both find themselves in a battle with Unicron to save human extinction after Elena encounters Noah and finds the key at the museum.

Director Steven Caple Jr creates a new, fresh take on the beloved franchise with a story about hope and teamwork. Caple not only brings back what fans love about Transformers but creates new relatable characters that bring the action to a level we have never seen. Not only that, but Caple selects actors of color, that showcase the struggle that real people are dealing with. He takes that and then combines an action-packed story with new and old characters from the franchise, He adds an important truth and a story that is easy to follow and gives people of color a moment to shine.

What ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ struggles with is the bad execution of VFXs that are lost when there are high-speed action sequences, especially when the story moves to Peru. At some points, it overpowers the story, making it hard to understand what is information. Overall, it feels messy at times. Also, the film is a full can of imaginary storytelling that puts the viewer in the center of it all, including vibrant locations and cultural representation.

Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback both shine in their roles, both offering a chemistry that is unmatchable. In Transformers films, chemistry is important, as it can easily be lost in transition due to bigger personalities such as the Transformers.

Paramount Pictures has a blockbuster summer hit in its hands that opens endless opportunities for spin-offs, collaborations, and real storytelling that offer relatable characters that fans will see themselves in. The best way to watch ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ is in IMAX due to its crisp picture and its mind-blowing sound. Do not miss it!
