Movie Review: ‘The Mother’ with Jennifer Lopez includes a great message, but feels bland and a film we have already seen

Jennifer Lopez and Netflix are calling all mothers to spend their Mother’s Day weekend with their new film ‘The Mother’ which streams on the popular streaming service this Friday. Is it worth your time?

‘The Mother’ is about an assassin played by Jennifer Lopez who comes out of hiding to protect her daughter, whom she gave up for adoption. The assassin must face her past to protect her daughter in a story full of unexpected twists and turns.

‘The Mother’ has a lot of great moments, but offers a story we have already seen. The assassin’s background story feels weak to the overall picture, making the story feel bland. Her intentions are misleading and are questionable to the end result. The film also feels like multiple movies in one, and the characters’ decisions feel very sudden. The ending of the film also feels cliché and disappointing. The main two characters go through a series of impactful events for it all to fall into a conclusion that feels like a disappointment.

Jennifer Lopez’s performance as the assassin is surprising and powerful, showcasing that she is at the level of Tom Cruise when it comes down to performing stunts and making a fascinating action film. Some stunts are over the top and unrealistic but are enjoyable to watch. Lopez also presents emotional scenes, but all feel like one tone, making her emotions feel uninterested and underwhelming to the story.

What is essential about ‘The Mother’ even if its story is similar to other Lopez films like ‘Enough’ is the inspirational messages, of acceptance, surviving, and fighting for who you love. After all, I think that’s the most important element of this movie. I say, press play and enjoy!

‘The Mother’ is now streaming on Netflix.
