Movie Review: ‘Evil Dead Rise’ rises to its occasion, honoring the franchise and providing gore and plenty of blood

By: Orlando Arechiga

The ‘Evil Dead’ franchise is popular within fans for its aggressive gore, and it’s wild turns. Director Lee Cronin delivers a unique new chapter to the franchise that does not feel repetitive. What I mean by that, is that sometimes horror films end up going into one direction and its character have no purpose. Cronin decides to put all his energy on deep characterization to gain a more powerful story.

Don’t worry, gore and blood is all part of the package, but something else to think about while watching is how relatable the characters are. In the film, you see a struggling family that has to deal with a series of unfortunate events. The gore and blood is the cherry on the sundae, these characters go into survival mode, which makes the writing and scene transitions rise to the occasion. Every action has a purpose.

Cronin also offers upscale, intense deaths sequences that will make you want to close your eyes halfway through the scene. I truly appreciate how Cronin decided to turn down the volume on comedy and focus more grisly horror that has made the “Evil Dead” franchise very popular within fans and the horror community.

The whole cast gives phenomenal performances, but child actor Nell Fisher as Kassie is a stand-out. In these type of films, it’s typical for the characters to make silly decisions, but Nell really focuses to showcase a why on decision-making. She is very talent. Also, Alyssa Sutherlan as Ellie and Lily Sullivan as Beth battle for the spotlight. Each actress give strong performances and when both are interacting, the energy is lively and creates more meaning to the characterization and plot

‘Evil Dead Rise’ might not be for everyone, but its top-notch performances, a unique story, and unforgettable deaths, will make the trip to the theater worth it. ‘Evil Dead Rise’ is now playing in movie theaters.
