Want a twist? In Spirited, The Ghost of Christmas Present played by Will Ferrel is challenged to reexamine his own past, present, and future with the help of Clint Briggs played by Ryan Reynolds. The Ghost of Christmas is in for a treat when all is reversed on him and he must teach himself the Christmas Spirit. The musical twist is based on ” A Christmas Carol” and is told from the point of view of the ghost of Christmas Present.

Director and Writer Sean Anders with John Morris create an impressive film concept for a beloved classic story that will be gladdened to the heart. The energy of each musical number is contiguous. Spirited is impressive because it examines the ideas of reflecting, following your dreams, and conquering. Also Spirited comes off as personal due to Anders and John’s excellent technique that acknowledges the viewer. The viewer is participating and engages throughout the film. They do this by directing the actors to speak to the viewer which is a unique technique to create a sense of belonging.

Octavia Spencer in “Spirited,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Musicals are not everyone’s cup of tea, but what is intriguing is the structure of each musical number. The numbers are energetic, animated, and pretty dynamic. Another great hook to the retelling of ‘A Christmas Carol’ is the story’s humor and the chemistry between the actors. Will Ferrell shines as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Ferrel dominates the screen with his distinctive humor and voice. Ryan Reynolds is a big surprise in his musical numbers which are brilliant and dazzling but forgettable compared to others.  Viewers will be shocked by Octavia Spencer’s voice which is angelic. Her talent is quite underused here. Also, The songs by the duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land) are catchy and melodious. They are always so good at what they do.

Spirited might not be for everyone, but it’s pleasantly a great holiday treat that teaches lessons and the spirit of the Holidays.
