Oklahoma! is the first musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The musical which is based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931play has been revived for a whole new generation making a stop to the Ahmanson theater in Los Angeles. Oklahoma! focuses on Laurey William’s romance with two rival suitors, Curly McLain and Jud Fry. Another romance takes place in the musical, Cowboy Will Parkers and delightful fiancée, Ado Annie.
For those expecting a production of Oklahoma! that is glowing and radiant, you have come to the wrong place. Daniel Fish’s interpretation of Oklahoma! is wild and unexpected. Although the production feels more like a table read which happens in the early stages of a play or musical, what matters here, is how Fish dives deep into the dark themes of the story. Fish focuses on mental illness, suicide, and economic inequality. Fish creates something astounding and impressive with direct effects that engage the viewer and creates a chilling and uncomfortable sensation. (ex: color lights, blackouts)

If you love the music of the musical, don’t worry, no lyrics or songs have been removed, but the score feels gloomier and feels more mourning than anything else. The whole cast is brilliant but a few cast members stand out more than others. Sasha Hutchings, who stars as Laurey shows her character that understands the wrongs better than the rights and gives an interpretation of the role that is enduring, daring, fearless, and a survivor. At the end of the show, you question her interpretation of the character because of her doings. Breaking the norms, the character Ado Annie is performed freely by Sis, a Black transgender performer whose energy fills the room and brings the sun out when things are too gloomy in Oklahoma.
The Revival of Oklahoma! brings a somewhat beautiful morning, but sadly rains overcome it with its dark themes and a dull performance that rather creates sorrow than anything else. If you are a fan of Oklahoma! you will never see the classic masterpiece the same after seeing Fish’s unique piece of theatre.
