Movie Review: ‘Paws of Fury The Legend of Hank’ is an enjoyable family ride although story feels messy

In Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, you will meet Hank. Hank is not the luckiest dog ever when he finds himself in a town full of cats who need a samurai to save their village from Ika Chu. Villain Ika Chu wants the village for his kingdom. Hank takes upon the task to save the village and become a samurai when the unexpected happens!

Paws of Fury: The Legends of Hanks feels like a soup with many types of ingredients that don’t go well together. In other words, many creative choices on plot and character didn’t match well. Too many ideas weren’t executed well. Some storylines worked, but some didn’t, and in the end, they all try to come together and give a somewhat forgettable satisfying result. The story will remind viewers of other similar family movies with similar characters (No titles will be named). What shines in the film is the unique humor.

Kylie Kuioka as “Emiko” and Michelle Yeoh as “Yuki” in Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.

What is clever about the film is the unique direction with pop culture references. They are great, but at times it feels like too many and takes the viewer away from the immersive storytelling. Perhaps fewer pop culture references would have made the plot more impactful. I do appreciate the clever approach to target a wider audience though because I found myself enjoying those moments more than the plot itself. It definitely made the experience unique as pop culture references are not seen in family movies as much as before.

Although the Paws of Fury: The Legends of Hanks isn’t perfect, the story delivers a couple of great messages that are great to point out. First, everyone can get along if we all work together. Second, Nobody is perfect. and Lastly, Power is in oneself. These are a few of the messages that make Paws of Fury a powerful story and make the film special.

Although Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank feels like a mess, but It worth a watch for its cute characters (Emiko is Adorable!) and powerful messages. After all, who doesn’t love cats and dogs?

The film is avaiable now on digital and will be on Blu-ray ™ and DVD on October 18, 2022.
