There are good musicals and there are great musicals! The Prom is Great!
Based on the Netflix 2020 musical comedy movie with the same name and the 2018 Broadway musical, The Prom tells the story of a small town girl named Emmy who wants to take her girlfriend to the Prom. With the help of veterans and rising Broadway stars, they rally in Indiana for Emmy’s right to go to her prom.

Director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw achieves to create a musical that is moving and remarkable. From the first note of the overture, you are in for an energetic treat. Music by Matthew Sklar feels very Disney with catchy melodies and lyrics by Chad Beguelin are stylish making it easy for all generations to understand and relate. What is special about The Prom is the risk it takes to teach others about the importance of being authentic. Emma’s story will inspire viewers to not judge someone’s Identity. Although some numbers might not be someone’s cup of tea because it’s themes are straight forward, overall the musical’s message is the takeaway. Every number teaches you something special.
Also, The musical honors the theater in different ways. The musical includes different type of Broadway actors which viewers will learn from. For example the Tony award Diva who is struggling to find work again or a new rising star hitting to fulfilled their dream! The Prom teaches you in an entertaining clever way about these roles. The actors playing them are great as soon they appear on the Ahmanson stage.
If you are looking for a great time at the theater, I highly recommend you to attend The Prom. The musical is pure magic and gaiety. It’s ecstasy! For those who love the theater and are part of the LGBTQ+ community, you will be heard and expectations will be met because The Prom is authentic and a satisfaction! After all, Everyone deserves to go to their prom!
