Movie Review: Nope

MonkeyPaws Productions and Universal Studios

I normally start my reviews with a synopsis of the film, but for Nope, I have decided to not speak about the plot as I want anyone who sees the film to have the best film experience. I will speak about its creative team and thoughts as an overall film.

Nope comes from the Mind of the incredible Jordan Peele who again elevates the movie experience to a groundbreaking level. Peele knows how to pull the viewer into his storytelling. Nope starts a little slow by dedicating more attention to the story’s characters, but that won’t matter after 15 minutes, when Peele casts his magic that puts you under a spell when the unexpected happens. Pay close attention, as Peele normally adds profound details to thicken the story. Nope isn’t quite scary but Peele knows how to put fear in his viewer with uncomfortable sounds, cinematic shots, and afterthoughts. It’s filmmaking at its finest.

In my opinion, Nope delivers a message of desire, consequence, and bonding. What I mean by desire, is that sometimes people become so obsessed with a desire that they go lengths without knowing the consequences it may lead to. Positively Peele gives us a great brother and sister story that takes place, at the height of larger-than-life developments in the story.

Jordan Peele brings back The Hollywood Spectacle to IMAX, that hasn’t been seen in a long time. He approaches the filmmaking in this one by using traditional western and sci-fi storytelling (western music and sci-fi objects) to reinvent the genre for a new generation.

Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer who play siblings are the perfect pairing. Kaluuya doesnt have much dialogue, but his expressions are so telling and speak highly of his acting abilities. Palmer’s performance is Oscar worthy placing her at level of some or the most iconic performances in Hollywood. Her role in Nope will open many opportunities to her.

Hit Classics like Jaws and The Thing had a baby, Nope would be it. Nope is the summer blockbuster we been waiting. Be ready for the unexpected.
Nope opens July 22 at a theater near you.
