Baz Luhrmann is back with a biographical film based on the “King of Rock n’ Roll” Elvis.
Elvis tells the story of the rise to fame of the famous legend played by Austin Butler and the complicated relationship with not-so-loyal Colonel Tom Parker played by Tom Hanks. You will learn about Elvis’s desires, struggles, bonds, and his downfalls.
Luhrmann creates a world for Elvis that’s marvelous to see. From the start of the film, you are immersive in his type of work and are quickly invested. In the first 30 minutes of the film, Luhrmann decides to focus on Colonel Tom Parker, then on the famous legend, which causes confusion on who the story is about. Thankfully, the movie moves at a fast pace with creative transitions, making Elvis the main focus sooner than later.

Elvis, an artist who capture attention with his iconic dance moves and his sex appeal, created a type of sexual awakening in men and women is captured in an enthralling way by Austin Butler. Butler commitment to the role comes forth in every musical performance. Elvis has been portrayed by many other actors, but Butler brings something new to the role which is charisma, emotion, and star power. Without a doubt, he will score multiple nominations for best actor in next year’s award season.

When I think of Tom Hanks, its hard not to think of role that are nurturing. In Elvis, Hanks Portrayal of crook Colonel Tom Parker comes off as an absurd obsession and quite terrifying. Hanks plays Colonel as some one who is in for himself and is believable take after take. Without a doubt, Hanks will score multiple nominations for his unrecognized role as well.
Elvis is good but not great. Luhrmann misses to make a deeper connection with Elvis and the viewer. he throws a lot of information but forgets to make Elvis human. For example, we are introduced to Elvis’s wife but their relationship is never explored at level that it has been shown in the media. Perhaps, their relationship can explored in another film.

Elvis will live forever and for now, Luhramanns work will showcase his legacy. Elvis is now playing in theaters.
