Movie Review: The Bad Guys

Universal/Dreamworks

The Bad Guys is now playing in a theater near you. Is it worth a watch?

Dreamworks’ newest animated The Bad Guys is based on the popular Aaron Blabey’s children’s graphic novel series with the same title. The film introduces a new gang of animals (a wolf, a shark, a tarantula, a piranha, and a snake) who are criminals and strive to be good guys after being caught stealing a golden statue at a met gala. Will they become good after all? That’s for you to see.

Director Pierre Perifel gifts us a unique animation story that is fun, goofy, and entertaining for the whole family. Perifel does an excellent job of involving all ages. Adults and Children will be engaged with a story that teaches us good vs evil, redemption, and facing difficult moments. Children will be excited to see action packed scenes like an army of guinea pigs fighting the bad guys while adults will enjoy seeing references from other similar plot films like Ocean 11 and Pulp Fiction. The film comes with a very talented and diverse cast that brings Aaron Blabey’s beloved characters to life. (Sam Rockell (Wolf), Awkwafina (Tarantula), Anthony Ramos (Piranha), Zazie Beetz (Diane Foxington)) Each actor is very high spirited making it hard to choose who is better than who. Everyone brings something good to the table, desiring more from each after the film is over.

What is very special about The Bad Guys is its unique style of animation. Thousands of animated movies have been done and Dreamworks brings something original. The character designs are perfect. The slow-motion segments have comic vibes. It’s beautiful and immersive. It moves the story in the right direction.
