Uncharted based on the video games of the same title developed by Naughty Dog release on February 18 exclusively in movie theaters. Is it worth a watch?
A film that has been in development since 2018, Uncharted tells the story of Nathan Drake played by Tom Holland, and his mentor Victor Sullivan played by Mark Wahlberg who go on an adventurous mission to Barcelona to find a lost treasure. Along the way, they encounter a series of villains who will do anything to stop them from collecting relics, maps, and gold. Together, Nathan and Victor must learn to trust each other in an uncertain playing field amongst not-so-trusty players to get the lost treasure.
A film that could easily be compared to other popular franchises like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and Mission Impossible, Uncharted is a must see. Fans of the video game might be disappointed with the film adaptation, but the film is surprisingly entertaining. Not only does it includes action pack scenes, easter eggs, unexpected twists, a bromance (between Holland and Wahlberg), but the movie is also a wild ride from beginning to end. Also, Video game fans might find Holland too young for Nathan Drake, but it works. By the third act, Holland becomes the Nathan Drake fans always hoped for.

A problem with the film is the lack of background story for its protagonists. Who is Nathan Drake? Who is Victor Sullivan? Why is this lost treasure so important to both? Never answered. Screenwriters Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway put more importance on moving a story that delivers more action than an emotional connection. A bit of a background story is introduced regarding Nathan and his brother, but not enough that shows the deep connection as brothers and their history. As someone who played the video game, the characters there show tons of emotion, and here, it seems that humor and CGI action scenes were the primary focus. One or two things are thrown in the first 20 minutes, but that’s it.

What is hoping to become a franchise, Holland, and a once “Nathan” Wahlbery chemistry is on point. I believe viewers will find their chemistry charming and will be wanting more. With a predictable plot, their charisma helps the story through bumpy moments. In future sequels (if made), these two can become a duo that will surely become legendary.
Uncharted is not the worse movie based on a video game. Fans of the video game shouldn’t go in with high expectations, but with an open mind on what can possibly become a more developed story in a future sequel. Viewers who have never played the popular video game will find Uncharted to be the ultimate movie experience.
Your best bet is to see Uncharted on an IMAX screen as it will offer you mind-blowing details and astonishing sound. Also, the film offers two post-credit scenes.
“Uncharted” opens in US theaters on Feb. 18.
