Movie Review: Home Sweet Home Alone

Disney Plus

Disney+ brings the Holiday spirit with an early gift to all of us, a new take on the 90s cult classic Home Alone. Is it worth a watch?

Home Sweet Home Alone directed by Dan Mazer does not give us nothing new. You meet Max, a kid who is left home alone. His family have left on a holiday vacation to Japan without knowing they left their kid on his own. You meet a set of “burglars” who are on a mission to get a doll that’s worth a lot of money. They want to save their home from being sold. They believe Max has the doll. The couple find themselves on an adventure full of devilish surprises.

If you are looking for a Christmas miracle, you have somewhat found it. Saturday Night Live duo Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell write a script that’s pretty cheesy but brings the holiday spirit and a lot of good sense of humor. The movie feels like a 120-minute skit from SNL due to the fact that many familiar faces from the NBC show are involved and play principal roles.

Ellie Kemper plays Pam, a woman that will do whatever it take to keep her home. Kemper is a stand-out. Her comedic timing is on point. She bring joy to the film and brings what’s so special about the Home Alone franchise. Archie Yates as Max is nothing special as his storyline seems very rushed. At no point during the film did I have any compassion after he was left alone. Mei played by Ally Maki is another stand-out due to the fact that her random dialogue and responses to the action of the movie cause a “what is going on?” reaction and creates out loud laughs. I hope she finds more work in Hollywood because she is fun.

Mazer does a wonderful job of creating nostalgia for fans who love the original film. Here and there you might hear the original score by John Williams. Also, one or two original characters show up in the film. Do you want to know who? Nope! You will just have to go see for yourself.

Also, I found myself confused why Max and his family had British accents and everyone else in film weren’t. I concluded that it could have been because the movie is implying that we can all get along for the Christmas season and share great moments together. There are a few easter eggs honoring the original film, so do keep in eye for those.

Is it worth a watch? Well, The movie is not a disaster as it holds its heart and a great message of love and family. After all, that’s all we want for the Holidays!

Home Alone Sweet Home is now available to stream on Disney Plus.
