Movie Review: Last Night in Soho

Last Night in Soho is a masterpiece. What Wright does by connecting what’s real and what’s fantasy is beautifully done on screen.  Wright brings together his love of horror and music and brings a film that has never been done before. The music choices add a haunting tone to the story. I mean when did you think that a classic like Downtown could possibly be turned into a song that could create chills down anyone’s spine.  As I watched,  Anya Taylor-Joy voice brings a sense of mystery where you begin questioning what you are seeing on screen. Joy shines as Sandie. Her presence in all her scenes is great. Her musical number was quite shocking as it channels the tone of the film very well. After this role, doors will open for joy to audition for musicals. No questions asked. She will be booked. She is a talent.

The movie is easy to follow, but character development gets confusing, especially by the third act. Is Eloise seeing the truth or is it all in her head?
Details matter so I did like that in one of the scenes, there was some form of LGTBQ+ representation. I think that’s quite important to show in films today. If the film becomes highly popular, this IP could possibly become popular for Universal Studios. I could possibly see a maze be made for Horror Nights if the film finds its audience.
Overall, the message in the film, in my opinion, is that YOU are your worse enemy. Your fears can become a nightmare and make you do things you never thought you could do. Was Eloise seeing her own fears within Sandie’s story? I believe that Eloise was fighting her own fears and using Sandie as a metaphor to become a better young woman.

We will never know the answer. Also, our innocence can be taken away as in my opinion that was Sandie’s case. Her innocence was taken away and ended up haunting her forever. Overall, the ending is powerful but does it really end as a happily ever after? I don’t think so, Sandie will haunt Eloise forever. Wright doesn’t disappoint with this! It’s a masterpiece and will live to be one of the best films of 2021
